Meet our owner - Margaret Morris

Margaret wanted to turn her home into a residential care home right in 1986. She always wanted to care for the elderly, and sought out as much information as she could on the subject. She began her training by attending a 1-year course on ‘Care Of The Elderly’, at Wilmorton College (1986-1987). She then completed a 2-year social service course (C.S.S) at Mickleover College. In addition to this, she has also received a certificate for food hygiene, and went on to complete a training course and obtain a certificate for the intermediate food hygiene.

Through all these years, she has attended many day courses to learn all aspects of caring. Since January 1990, she has worked at every position in the home; as a Care Assistant, Senior Care Assistant, Domestic, Cook, Deputy Manager and Manager. This has allowed her to understand the true nature of this job, and the level of hard work and effort that this requires. In November 2005, she completed an NVQ4 Care and Management training course at Wilmorton College.

We have 34 members of staff who support us in all aspects of care. They consist of 4 management staff, 7 senior carers, 12 carers, 5 domestics, 4 kitchen staff and 1 administrator, most of whom are NVQ trained. We also have a person who is responsible for all the maintenance in our care home.

Location and History

Gables Residential Home was established in 1990 by Margaret Morris and is today managed exclusively by her. The Gables is a delightful, modern home set in the midst of beautiful landscape gardens. Located in the leafy suburb of Oakwood, yet only 3 miles from the centre of Derby, it offers care, comfort and security to all who live here. Furnished and equipped to a high standard, it offers a relaxed, cosy and family lifestyle with good food, comfortable spacious accommodation, and most important of all, high-quality care from experienced and professionally trained staff.

We are registered with The National Care Standards Commission as a residential home providing accommodation and care for older people. Care is available to anyone, male or female, over the age of sixty-five who has either been assessed as needing care, or anyone who independently chooses to live in a residential home and accepts responsibility for the cost.

We are registered for 28 places, plus 4 day-care places for either men or women from retirement age onwards.
Gables Residential Home is not a nursing home, and as such it would be in breach of its registration to admit a resident in need of nursing care. Residential care can best be described as a means of providing a greater degree of support for elderly people that they cannot retain themselves, due to age, frailty, confusion or disability. Thus, we provide residents an opportunity to enjoy a lifestyle that offers care, comfort and security amongst like-minded people. Within our care system we are also able to welcome residents with a manageable degree of confusion or disability as defined by the homes initial assessment at the time of admission. Our care covers emotional, social, spiritual and physical needs.
